In a powerful act of remembrance, Concept Smoke Systems partnered with special effects designer Mike Jones of The Pyro Studio and Historic Royal Palaces to deliver a visually evocative experience for Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers. This poignant installation at the Tower of London honoured those who lost their lives in the First World War, transforming the Tower’s moat into a moving sea of symbolism and atmosphere.
Creating a Reverent Visual Tribute
To help bring this powerful event to life, Concept supplied smoke and haze effects using their ViCount Hazer systems. Designed specifically for large-scale outdoor environments, the ViCount Hazers are known for their fine, persistent haze output—delivering a consistent atmospheric effect without overpowering the solemnity of the installation.
Immersive Light, Shadow, and Memory
Held in the days leading up to Armistice Day, Beyond the Deepening Shadow featured over 10,000 individual flames lit in the moat, accompanied by a haunting soundscape and poetry. Concept’s role was to enhance the emotional tone of the space, using haze to shape light and shadow—adding visual depth and dimension that elevated the tribute’s emotional impact.
Technical Execution with Artistic Sensitivity
Strategically positioned around the moat, the ViCount Hazers produced ultra-fine particulate haze that interacted beautifully with the flickering flames. Their robust, weather-resistant design ensured reliable performance throughout the nightly commemorations, operating quietly and efficiently in line with the respectful tone of the event.
Led by Mike Jones and The Pyro Studio, the event’s visual execution was both technically sophisticated and artistically sensitive. The result was a breathtaking fusion of tradition, memory, and innovation—creating a deeply moving experience for thousands of visitors.
